Delmas, Daniel.
The étang de Berre, near Marseilles (France), is an inland brackish basin with a high primary rate of production. In 1966, the diversion of the Durance River introduced important hydrological changes. A study of organic matter mineralization and ionie exchanges at the water-sediment interface has made it possible to distinguish two areas, according to the composition of organic matter, mineralization mechanism and ionie transfers. In the North, the high rate of mineral sedimentation leads to a low content of organic matter in the sediment. This organic matter of detrital origin is little affected by mineralization; there is, however, high production of ammonium nitrogen, which is released to overlying waters. Nitrates and nitrites undergo denitrification...

A laboratory model system for analysing microbial interactions occurring in anoxic estuarine sediments. ArchiMer
Herbert, R; Keith, S.
Defined mixed populations of Clostridium butyricum, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Chromatium vinosum co-existed for long periods when grown in a single stage chemostat with glucose as sole carbon source. The nature and availability of the inorganic nitrogen source exerted a major effect on carbon flow in the experimental system. The data show that both the C. butyricum and D. desulfuricans isolates can utilise NO sub(3) as an e super(-)acceptor with an increase in cell yield. Under these growth conditions the free S super(2-) levels were lower resulting in more stable mixed populations. In addition the data show that the C. butyricum produces more oxidised fermentation end-products (acetate) when NO sub(3) super(-) was available and more reduced products...

Models of relations between bacteria and plankton, and regeneration processes in marine planktonic ecosystem. ArchiMer
Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Cauchi, B.
In order to study bacteria-plankton relationships, experimental and mathematical models were used to stimulate biological processes implicated in plankton ecosystems and to analyze community relationships. The model components are phytoplankton, zooplankton, autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, ciliates, nutrients, organic matter and phytoplankton antibiotics. This study shows the importance of some factors affecting bacteria communities dynamics and the bacterial activity in mineralization process. Bacterial populations seem to be controlled essentially by the concentration and chemical composition of organic substrates. Antibiosis and predation show a lesser importance on changes in bacteria communities.

Marty, D.
The mineralization of cellulose was examined in mono and cocultures of marine anaerobic bacteria (cellulolytic bacteria, fermentative non-cellulolytic bacteria and methane-producing bacteria). These studies displayed interactions between these groups of microorganisms: inhibition relationships (inhibition of methanogens during active growth of fermentative bacteria) and syntrophic relationships (growth of fermentative non-cellulolytic bacteria depended on metabolites produced by cellulolytic bacteria; increased in rate of cellulose hydrolysis in presence of fermentative non-cellulolytic bacteria; interspecies H sub(2) transfer reaction between fermentative bacteria and methane-producing bacteria).

Vanwambeke, F; Bianchi, M.
Bacterial response to organic (amino acids) or inorganic (NH sub(4) super(+)) nitrogen was studied in 350 liter closed batch systems. The experiments demonstrate an important NH sub(4) super(+) remineralization associated with bacterial growth. The differences between substrate and bacterial C/N ratios and bacterial metabolic demands partly explain the high values of ammonia produced. Grazing by heterotrophic microflagellates resulted in an important release of NH sub(4) super(+). This suggests and important role of grazers for the nitrogen remineralization in natural waters.

Ansenne, A; Compere, P; Goffinet, G.
The mineralized tergite cuticle of four terrestrial isopods (Oniscoidea) (Ligia oceanica, Oniscus asellus, Porcellio scaber and Armadillidium vulgare ) and of the marine isopod Sphaeroma serratum shows a general organization comparable to the fundamental plan of the decapod sclerite cuticle. Moreover, as in decapods, the procuticular layers are not tanned and mineralization rates, from 60 to 80% of the total cuticular dry weight, are of the same importance. However, the chitin protein microfibril distribution according to a homogeneous system in the mineralized procuticular proximal layer in all isopod species so far studied does not allow any comparison of this layer with the non-mineralized membranous layer.

Bouligand, Y.
The crustacean integument is an excellent model for the study of cuticular morphogenesis, at different organization levels. At the supermolecular level, subunits of chitin and protein assemble and show the organization of a stabilized liquid crystal. At higher levels corresponding to cells and cells populations, several controls are involved in the fine architecture of the epicuticle, in the mineral distribution and in characters which concern the whole animal, such as isometric or allometric growth.

FERNANDES, F. A.; FERNANDES, A. H. B. M..

Short-term changes and longitudinal distribution of carbon metabolism in the Piauí River estuary (Sergipe, Brazil) BJB
SOUZA,M. F. L. de; COUTO,E. C. G..
Net pelagic metabolism (NPM) and net ecosystem metabolism (NEM) were assessed by sigmaCO2 changes in three sampling stations along Piauí River estuary. At the upper estuary station, sampling was carried out over 48 h. Samples exhibited high DIN:DIP ratios. Chlorophyll-a ranged from 0.2 to 2.5 mug.l-1, being higher at the upper estuarine station than marine ones. Net pelagic metabolic rates ranged from -13.2 to 61.2 mgC.m7-2.d-1. Presence of mucilaginous algal material can explain the net mineralization. In the photic period, NPM ranged from-0.05 to 3.04 mgC.m-2h-1. NEM ranged from -7.77 to 6.65 mgC.m-2.d-1. Bottom ressuspension due to microphytobenthic flotation and a high turbidity plume inside de estuary reflected in negative metabolic rates...

Dissolved inorganic carbon and metabolism of an eutrophic lacustrine system: variations from a 36-hours study BJB
PEDROSA,P.; REZENDE,C. E..
Based on variations of pelagial dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations this article provides estimations of net primary productivity and net mineralization -- net carbon metabolism -- in Cima Lake (Rio de Janeiro State). DIC concentrations varied from 203 to 773 µmol L-1 and %CO2(aq) (saturation) from 339 to 4,901. Net carbon metabolism per light/dark periods from the 36 hours of study ranged, respectively, from -556 to 503 mmol DIC m-2 12 h-1. Marked variations in daily net carbon metabolism of the lake were also observed. The values ranged from -25 to -194 mmol DIC m-2 day-1. The findings were discussed as indicators of dynamic biological behavior toward production or mineralization of organic matter in the system. And, the system seemed to...

Enhanced degradation of metalaxyl in agricultural soils of São Paulo State, Brazil PAB
Papini,Solange; Andréa,Mara Mercedes de.
This work investigated the effect of repeated applications on enhanced degradation of metalaxyl in two different agricultural soils used for cultivation of orange and lemon from Casa Branca and Itapetininga districts of São Paulo State, Brazil. Soil samples were collected from areas repeatedly treated with commercial ridomil 50GR for six successive years, and from other areas never exposed to this fungicide. At the laboratory, soil samples received a 14C-metalaxyl solution and its degradation was studied through radiometric techniques to measure biomineralization and recovery of extractable- and soil-bound products. Enhanced degradation was verified only in one soil, although partial degradation and mineralization of the fungicide were detected in both...

Infoteca-e
MENDES, I. de C.; REIS JUNIOR, F. B. dos.
ABSTRACT: Cerrado soils are extremely old, highly weathered and depleted in essential nutrients, especially P. For this reason, the addition of P fertilizers is mandatory in order to obtain economical yields of annual crops. Soil microorganisms play a key role in the P cycle. The P immobilized in the soil microbial biomass acts as reservoir of this element. Soil microorganisms also produce enzymes that act in the P mineralization, participate in the solubilization of inorganic phosphorus and are able to form symbiosis with plants, denominated mycorrizha, enhancing the uptake of this element. In this review we discuss the results of several studies evaluating the use of soil microorganisms to increase P availability in soils, some of the difficulties...

Influence of repeated applications of glyphosate on its persistence and soil bioactivity PAB
Andréa,Mara Mercedes de; Peres,Terezinha Bonanho; Luchini,Luiz Carlos; Bazarin,Sheila; Papini,Solange; Matallo,Marcus Barifouse; Savoy,Vera Lucia Tedeschi.
Pesticide degradation studies are essential to evaluate its impact in the environment and on non-target organisms. The effect of repeated soil applications of the herbicide glyphosate on its dissipation and on soil microorganisms was studied by radiometric and microbial techniques. Results indicated fast dissipation of the [14C]-glyphosate or [14C]metabolites extractable residues (half-life of 0.92±0.29 month), but increasing half-lives of total mineralization ranging from 2.2 to 3.4 months as the number of applications increased from 1 to 4. No significant correlation was found between 14CO2 production and dehydrogenase activity.

Dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the N-E Atlantic and the N-W Mediterranean with particular reference to non-refractory fractions and degradation ArchiMer
Aminot, Alain; Kerouel, Roger.
Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) measured in deep profiles in the N-E Atlantic and in the N-W Mediterranean in the period 1984-2002 are described. After accurate validation, they show close agreement with those previously published. Classic profiles were obtained, with concentrations decreasing in deep waters. In the Mediterranean and in the Atlantic comparable concentrations were found in the 1500-2000 m waters, 44-46 mumol 1(-1) DOC, 2.6-2.8 mumol 1(-1) DON and 0.02-0.03 mumol 1-1 DOP. In the surface layers, DOC concentrations were higher, but DON and DOP concentrations lower, in the Mediterranean than in the Atlantic, leading to higher element ratios in the Mediterranean. In autumn,...
